ag_artist_statement : None of my work was intentional. It developed over time. I never liked to explain a particular piece. If I have made a painting and I am happy with it, hopefully it can speak for itself. Each person takes something a little different from each picture. I use fruits, flowers, objects to explore color and texture. Sometimes I focus on the smallest section of an object and I make it bigger to the point of abstraction, not attempting to paint in a realistic style.
ag_biography : I was born in Lima, Peru. I grew up in several different countries in Latin America. I came to the United States when I was fifteen years old. I became a teacher and earned my Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin. I have taught languages, literature and history for 29 years. Art was always my sane and safe place. I have always been fascinated by colors and textures. I have participated in several art competitions and my pieces have been featured in art exhibits and art magazines in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, California, New York, Massachusetts, and Kansas. I currently live in Houston where I am a language teacher at a college preparatory school.

In order to create her artworks, Maria Regina Ruiz focuses on a minuscule segment of a photograph, which is usually an inch or a quarter of an inch long. Ruiz pores over this segment in order to magnify it and, in doing so, reveal the allure of detail and the pockets of life that we overlook. Ruiz chooses her subject matter based on what catches her eye, and allows her process to guide her forward. Ruiz’s mastery of the technical aspects of painting captures our imagination and allows us to ruminate upon every line and area of color she creates. In fact, her color choices stem from the home she grew up in, which her mother always filled with flowers. Flowers and their naturally-vibrant hues recur throughout Ruiz’s work, bringing her back again to her mother.
Ruiz was born in Peru and now lives in Houston, Texas. In addition to her career as a painter, Ruiz is a teacher, and she holds a PhD in History, Literature, and Philosophy. Her art has received recognition at various art shows and galleries, most recently at the Art Show International Color Competition. Ruiz is also well-traveled, and her travels provide her insight into the importance of color in various world cultures. She aims for her artwork to foster appreciation for the little things in life, to allow the viewer to see the details of their own life in a different light.

ag_web_statement : I paint the small wonders of the everyday. The ordinary things that go unnoticed; an apple, a flower, a rock, a piece of rope. I focus on a tiny section of a photograph, usually an inch or a quarter of an inch, and magnify it. There is something wonderful about looking at a tiny piece of paper and revealing the hidden magic that lies within an object or element of nature; the organic forms, the movement, the colors. By turning the minuscule into majestic, I celebrate the infinite beauty of our environment.
