Robin Ahlgren
My work exists in the space between abstraction and figuration. Through simplified bodies, expressive lines, and fragmented forms, I explore human connection and the complex emotional spaces that exist between people. Closeness and distance are recurring themes within my work. Figures meet, overlap, separate, and sometimes appear to dissolve into one another. Rather than depicting specific individuals or moments, I use the human form as a way of exploring intimacy, vulnerability, longing, memory, and the invisible connections that can remain between people even when they are physically apart.
Influenced by Cubism and modernist traditions, my visual language reduces the body to fluid geometries and gestural lines. Restrained, earthy palettes are often contrasted with deeper, more expressive tones, while areas of negative space become as important as the figures themselves.
My background in architecture is present throughout my work, particularly in my sensitivity to balance, proportion, and spatial composition. Yet painting offers me something architecture cannot: the freedom to work instinctively, allowing imperfections, gestures, and emotion to remain visible.
I do not seek to provide a complete narrative. Instead, I want my paintings to leave space for interpretation, inviting the viewer to recognize something of their own relationships, memories, and experiences within the figures.
