Alexander List
New York-based artist Alexander List creates detailed artworks inspired by nature, using an unexpected combination of metal, wood, and light.
List’s artistic journey began with botanical illustrations in watercolor and gouache. Over time, he explored different materials and techniques, eventually discovering the possibilities of embossing metal. His current works are made from gold- or silver-plated aluminum, which he carefully shapes by hand and mounts onto wood.
Nature remains at the heart of his practice. His visits to São Miguel, an island in the Azores, had a strong influence on his work.
The island’s lush forests, dramatic landscapes, and sense of calm encouraged List to return to the botanical subjects that first inspired him.
He is also influenced by the traditional azulejo tiles found throughout Portugal and São Miguel. These ceramic tiles often come together as mosaics, forming larger images through detailed patterns, scenes, and botanical designs. This approach inspired List to experiment with combining multiple sheets of embossed metal to create larger mosaic-like compositions. While some of his works are created from a single sheet, others bring together several pieces to form a larger image.
Each work begins as a small drawing before List carefully traces and embosses the design onto metal. By creating raised and recessed areas, he allows light to move across the surface. As the viewer changes position, the artwork can appear different, revealing new highlights, shadows, and details.
Through this process, List creates works that invite viewers to slow down, look closely, and experience the quiet beauty of nature through material and light.
