Steve Fogel
My work begins with close observation. I am drawn to structure, light, texture, pattern, and the quiet transformations that occur when familiar subjects are isolated from their ordinary context. Working primarily in fine art photography, I use the camera not simply to record what is in front of me, but to reinterpret it.
I am especially interested in the point at which representation begins to move toward abstraction, when a reflection, architectural detail, flower, surface, or fragment of the natural world becomes something less immediately recognizable and more open to interpretation.
My background in medicine has influenced the way I see. Years of careful observation have taught me to notice subtle differences, relationships, and details that can easily be overlooked. That same attention now informs my photography. Whether I am photographing architecture, botanical forms, urban scenes, or abstract compositions, I am looking for the unexpected within the familiar.
My goal is to create images that encourage the viewer to slow down, look more closely, and discover something they might otherwise have passed by.
