Rachel Ovadia: The Art of Flow

Rachel Ovadia’s art is deeply personal, yet unmistakably universal. With an impressive repertoire that spans painting, drawing, etching, and sculpture, her abstract paintings reflect the ebb and flow of her life’s experiences waltzing between science, intuition, and spirituality.

Born in Lithuania, Ovadia’s journey has taken her across continents. From the historic streets of Europe to the wide-open spaces of North America, she’s soaked in the character of each place. It shows in her work—not literally, but in the way her pieces feel like they belong everywhere and nowhere at once.

Ovadia’s deeply curious spirit, however, led her beyond the outward appearance of the natural world. Interested in rheology–a branch of physics studying the flow of matter–she set out to understand the chemical and molecular structure of paint to manipulate its density and elasticity. 

“It’s a conversation,” she explains, “between me, the material, and the canvas. Sometimes the paint leads, sometimes I do.” Using wooden sticks and spatulas, she blends pigments and mediums to create a dynamic interplay of textures and contrasts, resulting in works that evoke the rhythm and flow of a symphony. 

Her process is intuitive, but not erratic. Before starting a piece, Ovadia takes time to clear her mind. “It’s about trust,” she says. “You have to trust yourself, trust the process, and trust that what you’re creating will speak to someone, even if you’re not sure how.” That balance between intuition and control is what gives her work its distinctive tension—an interplay of spontaneity and precision that keeps you looking.

Choosing would feel like picking favorites among your memories.”
