I use traditional eastern materials and techniques like calligraphy and hanji, handmade Korean paper, and blend them with acrylics and coffee. I love the warmth and tranquility of all that is ancient and I try to convey these feelings with minimalist compositions and a soft palette of beiges and browns. My work is an abstract reflection of my emotions, stories, and memories; images of myself as a child scribbling, the leaves changing through the seasons, or the gentle sound of the rain.

ag_artist_statement : ART STATEMENT Since I became deeply attracted to Hanji, one of the materials of calligraphy, I significantly have thought about various ways of calligraphy’s work. I do not only break away from the form of art that has been talked about in letters but also feel that the essence of abstraction has the power of stories. The pictures I draw are things I feel every day I feel tranquility from all that is ancient, which thought is coming from the proverb ‘All that is ancient is beautiful.' '오래된 것은 다 아름답다.' The old things give me some warmth, and the feeling is related to Hanji which has tranquility. On the basis of this inspiration, my artwork started from these kinds of abstract ideas and shows an oriental touch, but modern with sensibility. All my work is associated with ordinary life stories of mine. When I was younger, I meet myself playing scribbling, and cutting on paper, and these life stories are reflected in my work Inside of my childhood, this is telling my life and being our life and memories as well. Also, the times have changed rapidly, and the age I grew up has naturally switched from analog to digital era. Of course, it is good for me to live in a speedy and convenient environment Whereas I miss the analog era which has sincerity and aesthetics of slow. New things are always fresh, but unfamiliar. The cold machine provides abundant circumstances, but I feel that I am being trapped in another world. I may have locked myself inside of a computer and gradually turned myself away from the outside. I hope to everyone that avoids another me who communicates in the cold machine of the modern age and earnestly feel tranquility through my artwork.

Yeonhwa Sung's stated goal in her hanji works is to instigate the flow of streams within the subconscious that slake the stimuli-weary modern soul with internal rest and tranquility. Hanji is the Korean paper-making process that uses the bark and resin from the dak tree to craft a fabric-like, durable writing medium. This message of halcyon reassurance is conveyed with a surprisingly calm semi-cubist abstracted style that integrates acrylics like warm wheat, faint creamy pinks, buck wheat, swiss coffees, Manhattan grays, almost-purple-deep, umbers and deep slatey blues and grays.

As a singularly-accomplished, multi-award-winning expert in calligraphy, Sung teaches the craft in her hometown of Daegu, South Korea. She often adds lettering and characters to her works, like elegant graffiti. She is also a literal shelf-clearing bestseller after her LA ART premier.

Her chromatic mien of light but also earthy came from the beauty she saw on the canvas from a spilled cup of coffee. Sung often fortifies and adds texture to her framed works with the added tradition of candle-wax curing the surface, adding to the longevity that reinforces her message of comforting impulses. Impulses that parallel her fascination with the ancient elemental ways. She sees these ways as an obverse to today's productive and convenient but clamorous and often superficial digital world.
