I was born and raised in Iraq; an ancient culture renowned for its rich historical traditions. The artistic heritage of Mesopotamia along with the pioneering work of contemporary Iraqi abstract artists have provided a fertile ground for my art to blossom. Despite the monumental challenges of growing up in a country ravaged by numerous wars, I was able to find joy in art and create my own definition of beauty. I take cues from natural and urban environments, jotting down impressions on a sketchbook that never leaves my side. These could include shapes, patterns, textures, feelings, or colors. My palette is dominated by neutral tones and blues, signifying the earth, water, and sky; elements that are ever present on the planet and provide sustenance to all beings. Each of my paintings conveys a message of gratitude, hope, beauty, and perseverance. There is beauty everywhere, and it is up to us to find it in the humblest things. Beauty is the illumination of our perception of the world. Dreams come true through belief and perseverance.

ag_biography : My name is Suzanne. I was born and raised in Iraq; an ancient culture renowned for its rich historical traditions. The art culture in Iraq began thousands of years ago when Iraq was part of Mesopotamia. I started painting at an early age. My early art memories involve weekends visiting ancient sites such as Uruk, a city dominated by monumental mud-brick buildings decorated with mosaics of painted clay cones embedded in the walls, an extraordinary work of art. I was also acquainted with contemporary art in Iraq through exhibitions of Iraqi pioneers in abstract art, such as Jamel Hamoudi, Layla Al-Attar, and Sabih Naama. I remember how thrilled I felt to receive feedback and autographs from these famous artists. Despite all the monumental challenges that came with growing up in Iraq and surviving three wars, I was able to find joy in creating art. In the midst of all of that, I created my own definition of beauty. Creating art was my sanctuary. In 2005, I had to leave my whole life behind, along with all my paintings, to start a new life in Canada. I had to put all my creative dreams on hold as I immersed myself in a new culture. In 2012 I received my bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, and I have been working in this field since. After settling down in my career and life, I decided to embark on my art journey again. I went to the Alberta College of Art and Design and took Drawing and Painting courses as a way to get back into the art scene. Since then, I have been painting every day, exploring new techniques, and playing with new media. I use acrylic paint, gesso, modelling paste, crackling paste, and marble dust. I love to create textured paintings. I am fascinated by textures. It gives my artwork a 3rd dimension and a lively feel. It is hard to contain what inspires me. I am inspired by shapes, colours, events, feelings. But, I am also inspired by nature's infinitely exquisite shapes, colours, and events. I love the use of gold and silver as they add elegance to my paintings. Each one of my paintings conveys a message of gratitude, hope, beauty, and perseverance. There is beauty everywhere, and it is up to us to find it in the humblest things. Beauty is the illumination of our perception of the world. Dreams come true through belief and perseverance. I hope you find elegance, inspiration, and empowerment in the artworks that I offer.

Painter Suzanne Farman was born in Iraq and now lives in Canada. Growing up in Iraq, Farman looked to the nation’s indigenous art culture for inspiration. Her father recognized the young, budding artist’s interest in this thousand-year-old culture, and began taking her to exhibitions and galleries. Flash forward to today, and Farman’s vibrant, abstract paintings still draw influence from ancient Iraqi artistic heritage as well as the trailblazing work of contemporary Iraqi artists. She attended the Alberta College of Art and Design, and she evolves her techniques each and every day based on her technical training and various sources of inspiration.

The message of Farman’s work is that of connection. She is an avid hiker, carrying out careful observations of the outdoors that she then infuses into her paintings. Farman is able to gracefully convey the idea that beauty exists even in the smallest details of the world around us, as her keen eye for the artistic was honed at a very young age. She takes notes on the structures, shapes, patterns, and textures she sees on her beloved hikes, and upon her return analyzes these studies to form her calculated compositions. For Farman, beauty is the illumination of our perception of the world. Her paintings are her way of sharing her own perception of the world with us, allowing us to experience the multitude of inspirations that guide her artistic process. Her paintings ultimately evoke a deep and universal feeling of serenity and comfort, while also connecting us to Farman’s personal experiences and the things she loves.
