My practice begins with the story behind a photo and the attraction I feel toward it. I love hearing about the circumstances in which it was taken and the feelings experienced by the photographer. I visualize the images on the canvas: the season, the color palette, the subject matter. I begin with a loose pencil sketch putting in my shapes and perspective. I then do a black India ink sketch, becoming more committed to my vision. The black helps define my angles and shapes more clearly as well as give depth to certain areas. More fun and play happen once the ink is drying and I begin to make my color palette. I work with oil paints mixing them all ahead of time. I do not use any mediums or gels. I love the feel of mixing oils, as they are so pure and vibrant and it feels like icing a cake. On occasion I will do an acrylic backwash on the canvas to convey a three dimensional effect. The play of colors is by far my favorite part. I listen to music, have my eucalyptus and lavender oils infusing, and off I go diving into my canvas. My technique is that of large bold brush strokes using color to give shape, dimension, and highlight. I rarely blend, as I prefer to paint with intent. I put the exact color where I want it to be and leave it there. This helps keep the color pure and vibrant. I typically use one flat brush for my whole painting and I begin with my subject matter. I focus on one painting at a time as I like to paint wet-on-wet. After six to eight weeks, I apply a final layer of varnish to seal off the paint.

ag_biography : Katherine Muir Miller is a full-time artist with a gallery located in the beautiful heritage town of Perth, Ontario and a studio at her home in Ottawa, Ontario. Katherine was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. Katherine’s fascination with colour is a driving force in her paintings. Her connection with nature and extraordinary sense of vibrant colour in her beloved Canadian landscapes are reflected in her bold, colourful, playful interpretations on canvas. Katherine’s pieces capture memories of cross-Canada travel. Vintage elegance can be seen in her impressionistic realism pieces of recognizable landscapes. Katherine wants the viewer to feel movement, mood and simplicity in her work. “It’s all about the story behind the painting, that’s what inspires me”. Capturing the life adventures of friends, family and clients is the inspiration for Katherine’s original works. When people connect their treasured memories with one of Katherine’s paintings, it is the greatest pleasure of all. Katherine studied at the Ottawa School of Art and has been mentored by a range of gifted artists. Katherine’s work is represented in a number of galleries and private collections. Like her iconic pines, Katherine’s artistic style is one of evolution, rooted in the promise of possibility and continually growing in ways she never imagined. Katherine Muir Miller Gallery showcases Katherine’s collection, as well as representing other artists and artisans. All of Katherine’s works are available for purchase online. The gallery offers free consultation services for clients as well as a “Bring My Art to You” service where desired paintings being considered are brought to your home or office so that you can ensure that they are the right fit.

Katherine Muir Miller was born and raised in Montreal and now lives in Ottawa. As such, her work is distinctly inflected by her Canadian background. Miller aims, above all, to tell stories through her vividly hued landscapes, capturing impressions of memories made while traveling across Canada. Miller works as a full-time artist. She studied at the Ottawa School of Art and has been mentored by a range of artistic peers. She has exhibited all across Canada at various art fairs, galleries, and shows, and operates her own gallery – the Katherine Muir Miller Gallery – in Perth, Ontario.

Miller’s artistic drive stems from her love for Canada’s panorama of stunning views and her own personal connection with nature. It also stems from her own fascination with color; her innate understanding of it translates into bold, dreamlike interpretations of Canada’s underrated landscape. A vintage elegance washes over Miller’s Impressionist-inspired work, conveying the momentariness and simplicity so distinct of the Impressionist style. Not only do Miller’s paintings allow her to recapture her own memories within these landscapes, but they captivate the viewer by allowing us to enter the vistas of our own memory and relive personal moments with nature. Miller describes her muse as the “brilliant seasons of Canada”: her work is, fundamentally, a love letter to her own country. Along with the deeply personal memories she evokes, Miller aims to foster appreciation for Canada’s beauty through her work.
