I take an approach to my work that recalls pictorial and surrealist movements, recreating images with the use of special techniques and expertise gained working in cinema. This practical experience is used to enhance color and contrast to accentuate the narrative. I use very long shutter speeds to give a sense that the viewer is alone with the landscape in a calm, remote environment. I draw inspiration from the landscapes I come across as I hike into forests and mountains or walk by the ocean. What fascinates me the most are the details in small things and the stories captured by each image. My intention is to encourage a slower interaction and appreciation of our surroundings. There’s a whole world out there, we just have to open our mind to seeing it. All pieces can be enjoyed in 4 size options and are finished with a 95% UV resistance Lustre Laminate. Please view the size and price specifications listed beneath each piece.

ag_artist_statement : The approach to Vance’s series of work recalls pictorial and surrealist movements, recreating images with the use of special techniques and expertise gained working in cinema. This practical experience is used to enhance colour and contrast to accentuate the narrative. Composition in each print leads the eye throughout the frame – and with the added element of fantasy, it invites the viewer to become engaged as a character in Vance’s imagined world. The audience is actively invited to experience a sense of being there themselves. The use of very long shutter speeds creates an effect of eliminating human presence from the image. This technique seeks to create the feeling that the viewer is alone within landscape, in a calm, relaxing, solitary environment. The intention therefore, is to encourage a slower interaction and appreciation of our world. This conceptual, dream-like approach distinguishes Vance’s work, aligning it with the notion of ideas that randomly enter the mind while sleeping.
ag_biography : Jesse Vance (Born 1991, Penticton, Canada) began photographing in 2009. His initial primary interest was not photography or a specific art medium, but rather it was to work in the film industry as a technician. Years of working in that field spurred his interest in shooting landscape photographs. Vance first explored panoramas with high contrast scenes. He later transitioned to a conceptual approach, with more involved compositions and lower contrast, described as painterly and soft. The intention was to create a sense of relaxation, as if exhaling in a single breath — the embodiment of what Vance is as a person. Vance’s work has been submitted to international competitions, such as the International Photo Awards, One Eyeland Awards, and The ND Awards. He has been published in One eyeland's Best of the Best photographers book of 2021, Ranking #2. Vance has also donated three large format prints to the Surrey Urgent Care Response Unit. He is currently represented by Urban Art and Design in Langley, B.C. and Truth and Beauty in Vancouver.

Canadian nature photographer Jesse Vance brings the enchantment out of nature. His forest and marine scenes come alive through the expert eye of his camera. At any moment, we expect a gnome to peek out from the trunk of a tree or a siren to beckon us as she lounges on a rocky islet, in the midst of a hazy sea. The tones of his images are almost otherworldly. The color of the ocean is a technicolor aqua blue, the ferns in the forest a vivid kelly green. The bark of the trees appear to be made of cork or gray fur. Everything seems real, but not quite. We may have seen that forest or beach somewhere, but we can’t shake off the feeling that there is something more awaiting us at the end of the dirt path or behind the brightly painted lighthouse. A seasoned film technician, Vance uses the skills he learned on set to fashion soft, painterly compositions. The intention was to create a sense of relaxation, as if exhaling in a single breath — the embodiment of what Vance is as a person.

Vance studied Film Production at Capilano University in Vancouver. He won first place in the Fine Art Photography Awards and the Int’l Photo Awards in the Special/Nighty Photography category and received an ND Awards honorable mention. His photographs were published in One Eyeland's 2021 Best of the Best Photographers book, and were ranked second. Vance lives and works in Surrey, BC, Canada.
