With a preference for being in solitude, I learned to create self-portraiture. I talk to myself through photography; with the medium, I can tell my life's story: from childhood disconnection, adolescence, and adult solo travels. I reflect on the memory of growing up. This is the foundation upon which I explore the topic of time and being. With a belief in love and humanities connection through shared feelings, I search for metaphors and gestures in the outside world which mirror my emotions and those through which I can connect to others. While twisting time in photographed 'reality' by playing with shutter speed, I also combine various techniques including drone, scanner, projector, and printmaking. I layer these upon the traditional photography to enrich my imagery.

ag_artist_statement : With a preference for being solitary, I learned to self-portrait and talk to myself via photography, of which the narrative unfolds from childhood disconnection to adolescence solo travel. I reflect on the memory of growing up as a foundation for exploring the topic of time and being, such basic human questions. With a belief in love and human's shared feelings, I search for the metaphor and gesture in my outside world to mirror myself and our overlapped emotions. Besides twisting the time in the photographed 'reality' by playing with shutter speed, I also combine the drone, scanner, projector, and printmaking techniques into my artmaking process to layer upon the traditional photo language for enriched imagery.
ag_biography : Growing up in China, a study background in science shaped my analytical viewpoint and a fascination with the inexplicable, while art making heats up the most emotional aspects of my personality. As a result, time and love are the two abstract threads that drive my researching and picturing. On one hand, they are part of my storytelling. On the other hand, they are sublimated ideology that inspires my thinking. In the process of combining photography and printmaking in my art exploration, Hiroshi Sugimoto’s photographs and Abstract Expressionism paintings are my important influence. Appreciating the power of rationality behind a beauty of order and poetry, I also reach out for the new vocabulary in my expression like spontaneity or automatism. Switching between an observer and a narrator, and transiting from the documentary angle to the image-making one, I complicate the real time and space in a photograph to question the blurred boundary between inside and outside, illusion and reality. In a recent project titled On the Edge of Elapsing, I document my time alone on a train across the United States, relating the fleeting landscapes outside my window to the inextricably woven past and present, connecting the photographic figuration of time to one’s flow of emotions and memories on a life journey. After receiving a BFA in Photography from Rhode Island School of Design in 2020, I am currently commuting between New Haven and New York.
ag_influences : Ancient Chinese art, in which poetry and painting are not separable (revealing each other), navigates my pursuit of emotionality and evocativeness in my image capturing, which often involves using figuration and metaphor. 2. Learning about Abstract Expressionism movement breaks my mind frame of photography as an 'objective' and non-abstract media/approach, which inspires a challenge to myself: can I bring more spontaneity and proactiveness into my photo-based work?

Born in Hefei, China, Erin Yueying Wang, a renowned photographic artist, chose to pursue her unspoken autobiographical reality through the use of photographic technique and imagery. Wang has an academic background in Landscape Architecture from Chongqing University and a BFA in Photography from Rhode Island School of Design. She documents her artistic rhetoric through her traveler’s lens, absorbing the changing scenery of daily life. These fleeting moments in time act as her autobiography; snapshots of her life, her childhood, and her travels. Through the camera, she shares her questions about the meaning of life.

Wang expertly manipulates the photograph of ’reality’ by playing with shutter speed. She combines the use of technology like drones, scanners, projectors with traditional printmaking techniques into her process, layering manipulated images atop traditional photos. Main influences of Wang’s artistic process include Japanese Manga and Anime, Ancient Chinese art, and Abstract Expressionism. The artist has been recognized by Saatchi Art 2021’s “100 New Voices” and was named the Saatchi Art 2020 Rising Star.
