My love of painting began as a child when I was mesmerized by the colors in the fields surrounding my home. I followed this passion into adulthood, gaining a Fine Art Foundation Diploma from the University of Arts London. During my formal education, I studied the work of traditional landscape painters. Inspired by Romantic art, I developed my unique style, by combining traditional techniques with modern painting materials. Since then I have explored vibrant, expressive atmospheres in my landscapes using the complex colors that can be achieved with acrylic paints, but never compromising my enthusiasm for traditional painting. Using seamless blending, my work shows an instant in time captured on canvas, prolonging the moments that often feel too fleeting in everyday life. The romantic aspect of my work encourages the imagination of the viewer to go beyond the physical reality of the work and immerse themselves in the scene.

ag_artist_statement : I am an acrylic painter, most inspired by a fusion of the Romantic and Impressionist periods. Up close, my art is comprised of overlapping colours and brush marks, which at a distance form a complete scene. I build up my paintings over many layers of glazing acrylic paint; this creates beautiful depth through complex workings with colour. Using gentle brushstrokes for seamless blending, my work helps to promote the feeling of capturing an instant in time on canvas, prolonging the moments that often feel too fleeting to be observed in everyday life.
ag_biography : Art of Emily Curtis Born in 1999. I specialise in acrylic and watercolour painting. Following a Diploma in Fine art from University of Arts London and a semester at Brighton University School of Painting, I decided to take the path of a full-time painter. During my formal education, I developed an interest in landscape painting, from the tradition of the romantic and impressionist periods and the work of Turner. I now live and work in Southampton, England and in addition to painting, I travel, and I play the flute. Both activities have an inspirational role in the creation of my paintings.
ag_influences : My biggest artistic influence is Turner, for his powerful atmospheric landscapes. I’m inspired by his work that bridges the gap between the Romantic and Impressionist periods. I explored Turner’s use of colour theory during art school, which formed the basis of my own experimentation with colour. I follow Tanya Shatseva, a Russian acrylic painter. Her use of bright acrylic paints inspired me to continue working more with colour and develop the vibrant work I have today. I decided to work more with acrylics and appreciate them as their own medium instead of trying to replicate the appearance of oil paints, as is often taught. The way Leonardo Di Vinci used scientific explorations to inform his artwork was influential because it led me to realise that my science qualifications might benefit my paintings. As a result, I completed a project in my Foundation course where I studied paints and inks starting at a chemical level and seeing how they behave under different conditions. I then adjusted my painting methods to fit my findings. This eventually evolved into the painting method I use today.

Emily Curtis is a British artist specialising in acrylic and watercolor painting. Following a Diploma in Fine Art from University of Arts London and a semester at Brighton University School of Painting, the young artist decided to take the path of a full-time painter. During her formal education, she developed an interest in landscape painting, from the tradition of the romantic and impressionist periods and the work of Turner.

In her work, Curtis portrays atmosphere and emotion, often inspired by moments in nature and urban life. As she builds up her scenes with layers of glazed acrylic paints, she creates beautiful depth through the complex interplay of texture and vibrant color. Her works capture an instant in time on canvas, prolonging the moments that often feel too fleeting to be observed in everyday life. The impressionistic aspect of Curtis’ oeuvre encourages the imagination of the viewer to go beyond the physical reality of the work and immerse themselves in the scene.

Curtis lives and works out of her studio in Southampton, England. In addition to painting, she travels and plays the flute, activities which provide inspiration in the creation of her paintings.
