Equal parts painting and sculpture, Michael Berger’s lighthearted and visionary portraits of nature beyond planet Earth convey a universe that is textured with waves of smoky-blue ribbons and rippling starlight. Even his more abstract, iconic works convey a sense of the sympathetic fabric which makes up the universe itself. Past field work in geology and geochemistry cultivated Michael’s appreciation for the vivid colors of stones, particularly red sandstone and dark blue vulcanite, and inspired his first investigations into color and mood. Michael also enhances the experience of his paintings by incorporating small painted magnetic objects, held in place by a thin backing of steel. He has imported the intense colors from his geological studies into these magnetic planetary bodies, stars and constellations which make up his universe.
With this unique addition to his imaginative paintings, Michael Berger’s work is forever in the midst of creation, ever-shifting in its dimensions and arrangements, like the universe itself, and our connection with nature is thus enriched.
