Compelled by the freedom that nature’s ethereality represents, Marielle Pesant concentrates on the colors, shapes, and compositions that best symbolize life’s intangible qualities. She uses leaves, birds, and waves as starting points for the colorful shapes that move through her compositions. Pesant’s acrylic paintings and digital prints have the clear-headed directness of Color Field explorations yet they also embrace the organic preoccupations of artists like Georgia O’Keefe. The work is sensitive and confident, attuned to nature but aware of its own identity as a symbolic representation of life. Pesant’s digital prints maintain a painterly quality despite their sleekly controlled composition-- the nature-inspired forms that she uses feel inherently bodily and human, as if they could only be articulated through a painter’s hand. The expanses of negative space in her paintings and prints accentuate the organic shapes, making the world Pesant creates even more liberating.
Marielle Pesant has exhibited internationally at venues that include the Frans Masereel Center in Belgium and Canadian Institute of Quebec. She lives and works in Quebec, Canada.
